Hotel Central is a small-scale, family-run city hotel on the Grote Markt in Bruges, literally at the foot of the Belfry. The historic mansion has a striking façade and a spacious terrace that overlooks the market square, allowing you to experience the city's vibrant atmosphere from the front row. Inside, the eleven rooms have recently been renewed, with a total of approximately twenty-two sleeping places. The decor is simple but neat, with comfortable beds, a private bathroom with shower, television and WiFi.
The family brasserie and restaurant, serving classic Flemish and international dishes, are located on the ground floor. Guests can enjoy breakfast, a quiet lunch or dinner with a view of the medieval facades around the Markt. The style is casual and homey: no formal hotel atmosphere, but a warm atmosphere where regular guests, day trippers and hotel guests mingle. Due to the compact scale and the owners present, a stay feels personal and familiar, with a focus on basic comfort and an exceptionally central location.
When you step outside Hotel Central, you immediately find yourself in one of the most iconic squares in Belgium: the Grote Markt in Bruges, surrounded by colorful stepped gables, the Provincial Court and the monumental tower of the thirteenth-century Belfry. During the day, the square is filled with carriages, market stalls and patios; in the evening, the lights and chimes provide an almost theatrical atmosphere.
A short walk away is the Burg with the town hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, and a little further the picturesque Reien, the canals that give Bruges its nickname Venice of the North. The narrow streets around the Markt lead to squares such as Huidenvettersplein and Vismarkt, where historic trading traditions go hand in hand with contemporary hospitality. From the hotel, you can also easily reach cultural attractions such as the Groeninge Museum, the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk and the Begijnhof, so you can combine architecture, art and city life in one walk.
The historic center is compact and traffic-free, so the area around Hotel Central is especially suited to pedestrians and cyclists. Shops, chocolatiers, lace shops and small galleries line the Markt like a ring, interspersed with cafes and restaurants. Here you can clearly see the mix between tourist crowds during the day and a slightly quieter, more local rhythm in the early morning and late evening.
• Climb the Belfry of Bruges for a panoramic view of the rooftops, squares and canals; along the way, you'll pass the carillon and the old treasury, which also makes the visit historically interesting.
• Visit Historium Brugge on the Markt and then walk to the Burg, where the Gothic Town Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood provide a good overview of the city's religious and administrative history.
• Take a tour of De Halve Maan Brewery on Walplein, a historic city brewery with museum and tasting, where you'll learn more about Bruges beer culture and the underground beer pipeline.
Restaurants
• Hotel Restaurant Central/Siren d'Or
This restaurant is attached to the hotel and is also located on the Grote Markt. Here you can eat classic Belgian and international dishes in an informal setting, with the large terrace overlooking the square as an asset.
• Saint George Restaurant
On the other side of the Market, at number twenty-nine, is Restaurant Sint Joris, a family business with a long tradition. In the renovated historic building, seasonal dishes and Flemish classics are served in a warm interior with lots of wood and soft colors.
• Restaurant't Mozarthuys
Restaurant't Mozarthuys is located on the picturesque Huidenvettersplein, a few minutes' walk from the hotel. This charming place is known for its stone grill, where you cook your own meat, fish or seafood, and for its cozy terrace near the old fish market and the boat dock.
Cafes & bars
• Le Trappiste
Le Trappiste is a specialized beer café in a thirteenth century cellar in the heart of Bruges, a short walk from the Markt. In the vaulted room, you can sample dozens of draught beers and an extensive menu of Belgian and international specialty beers, in an intimate, candle-lit atmosphere.
• Cambrinus beer brasserie
Bierbrasserie Cambrinus, near the Markt in Philipstockstraat, combines an extensive beer menu with classic Flemish cuisine. The interior is reminiscent of a traditional beer stube, with wood paneling and walls full of bottles, and the menu includes hundreds of different beers so that enthusiasts can sample and combine amply here.
• I Love Coffee Espresso Bar
Espresso Bar I Love Coffee in Sint Jakobsstraat is a trendy coffee bar just a few minutes' walk from the hotel. It offers a wide range of espresso and filter coffees, creative latte variations, homemade cold drinks and a small range of breakfasts and pastries, in a lively but relaxed atmosphere.
Lunch shops
• That's Toast
That's Toast in the Dweersstraat serves a contemporary all-day breakfast and creative toast dishes, within walking distance of the Market Square. The menu includes both sweet and savory options with lots of vegetables and original combinations, making it a great choice for a late brunch or light lunch.
• Sanseveria Bagel Salon
Sanseveria Bagelsalon, in a quiet street near the center, is a popular bagel bar where you can enjoy rich bagels, breakfast and lunch. The store is known for its cozy, vintage interior and the combination of sweet and savory creations, including vegetarian and vegan options.
• Local Bar
Bar Lokal, near the Burg and therefore a few minutes' walk from Hotel Central, is a cozy coffee and lunch bar hidden in a historic building. You can drink specialty coffee among local works of art and choose from a lunch menu including soup, salads, sandwiches and small hot dishes.
• By train, you will arrive at Bruges Station, from where city buses and taxis will take you to the Markt area in about ten minutes. From the station, it is also a pleasant walk to the center, along wide avenues and later through the historic city center.
• Within the city center, it's easiest to get around on foot: the main sights are a short distance from Hotel Central and most streets are compact and partly car-free. For those with reduced mobility, city buses and carriage rides are an alternative to still see a lot of the city.
• Travellers arriving by car should follow the ring around Bruges and choose one of the marked parking routes to central car parks such as Centrum Station or the underground car parks in the city center. From there, you can reach the Grote Markt on foot or a short bus ride.
According to official information, Hotel Central itself does not have its own parking garage on the Markt. Therefore, guests traveling by car usually use public car parks in and around the city center. The city of Bruges encourages visitors to park in large central car parks or park and ride zones and from there to walk or by bus to the heart of the city, so that the historic center remains livable and organized.
For those who want to park as close to the Markt as possible, there are several underground garages within walking distance. Parking Biekorf, below the municipal library in the Naaldenstraat, is located about fifty metres from the Grote Markt and is one of the city's most centrally located car parks. A little further is Parking Centrum't Zand, a large underground car park on the square of the same name and the King Albert Park, where you will find ample capacity, charging stations and a good connection to the center. On the edge of the city center, near the Queen Astrid Park, Parking Pandreitje offers a relatively quiet location yet a short walk to the hotel and the Markt.
If you want to park in a price-conscious way, you can opt for Parking Centrum Station near the train station, where you can often walk to the center in a few minutes or take a free or affordable bus ticket. Please note that in the city center, payment is required everywhere during the day and that street parking is limited in time. For busy weekends or events, it's a good idea to reserve a parking space online in one of the larger car parks in advance so that you can walk to your hotel stress-free.
Hotel Central in Bruges is an intimate, family hotel with simple but comfortable rooms, its own brasserie and an unrivalled location right on the Grote Markt, directly opposite the Belfry. Guests stay here in the middle of the historic setting and can reach the Burg, the Reien, museums and numerous shops and restaurants in just a few minutes' walk. In the immediate vicinity there are accessible restaurants with classic cuisine as well as specialized beer cafes and contemporary lunch addresses, making the hotel suitable for both a first introduction to Bruges and a repeat visit.
Because the hotel does not have its own parking in the square, it is important to think in advance about where to leave the car, for example in an underground car park or at the station with a connecting bus. If you mainly want to explore on foot and value a vibrant city atmosphere, Hotel Central is a practical, characterful base in the heart of Bruges.
