Contrast Bruges

Located at Predikherenrei 5, within the old city walls of Bruges, B&B Contrast welcomes travellers to an attractive, renovated mansion built in 1932. The property combines neo-Gothic accents and art deco stained glass windows with contemporary comfort: tidy, comfortable guest rooms with private fully equipped bathrooms, quality beds, flat-screen TVs and free WiFi. The front rooms overlook the Coupure water; the back rooms offer rest with a view of the courtyard and some rooms have a garden terrace or ceiling ventilation; the front rooms are equipped with air conditioning. Every morning, a varied fresh breakfast buffet is served in the garden-view dining room or on the terrace when the weather is nice. Practical: check-in by appointment only (until 9:30pm at the latest) and check-out until 10:30am; smoking is only outside the home and the B&B is not easily wheelchair accessible. Contrast does not have its own public car park; guests can park in the street or in the nearby Langestraat underground car park (24 hours), and there is a safe, covered bike park. Thanks to its location a five to six minute walk from the historic center, Contrast is a quiet, central base for exploring Bruges — a small-scale, comfortable choice for couples and small groups.

About the hotel

B&B Contrast is located in a characterful mansion from the early twentieth century at Predikherenrei 5, near the Coupure and within the historic city walls of Bruges. The brick façade hides high ceilings, decorative details and large windows that recall the home's grandeur, while the interior has been refreshed with light colors and contemporary accents. The rooms all have a private bathroom, comfortable beds with quality linen, a flat-screen TV and free WiFi. On the street side, the rooms overlook the water, on the garden side over the sheltered courtyard, which gives the house a clear diptych of city and peace.

The scale of the B&B has been deliberately kept to a minimum, so that the stay remains personal. Breakfast is served in an attractive dining room with a view of the garden and includes bread, spreads, fruit and home-style extras that vary according to the season. In the warmer months, the courtyard is a natural extension of this breakfast room and guests retire there during the day with a book or a cup of coffee. The hosts emphasize a calm, informal atmosphere where guests have plenty of privacy but can still easily ask for tips or directions.

B&B Contrast focuses primarily on visitors who want to experience Bruges at a slow pace. The combination of homely decor, small-scale layout and a location just off the busiest tourist axis makes the house particularly suitable for couples, individual travelers and small groups of friends or family. For those traveling by bike, there is a covered, secure bicycle shed, making the B&B also interesting as a basis for multi-day explorations of the area around Bruges.

The surroundings

The Predikherenrei and the Coupure are among the most atmospheric watercourses in Bruges. Along the water, row houses and mansions stand close together, interspersed with low facades, cobblestones and small bridges that define the silhouette of the city. Despite its central location, the neighborhood around B&B Contrast feels residential and quiet, a good counterpart to the busier streets closer to the Markt. In a few minutes' walk, you can reach the historic heart with its squares, alleys and museums, but when you return, the calmer rhythm of a waterfront residential neighborhood awaits you.

The canals here are a natural guide for walks. If you follow the Predikherenrei, you will soon reach Jan van Eyck Square and the adjacent streets full of galleries and small specialty shops. If you continue further towards Langestraat or over the bridges near the Coupure, you will enter lively shopping streets with a mix of local shops, bakeries, delicatessen shops and eateries. Thanks to this structure, you can always choose different routes from the B&B without losing much time traveling.

Things to do in the area

• Explore the Saint Anna neighborhood and the Adornes Domain with the Jerusalem Church, a less crowded part of Bruges where small streets, old houses of worship, and a historic chapel combine to create an intimate atmosphere. The walk clearly shows how the city has developed since the late Middle Ages, away from the most touristic axis around the Markt.

• Take a cultural stop at the Folklore Museum and the Lace Center near St. Anna Square. The museum brings daily life in Bruges in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to life, while the lace museum shows how fine craftsmanship is still being honored. Together, they provide an in-depth look at the well-known churches and major museums.

• Walk or cycle past the vests and windmills on and around the Kruisvest. From B&B Contrast, you can quickly reach the green belt around the city via the canals and a few residential streets, where paths run past old city gates, canals and windmills. This route offers viewpoints over both the historic city center and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Restaurants & cafes

Restaurants
• Punta Est Brasserie
At the corner of the Predikherenrei, a short walk from B&B Contrast, is Brasserie Punta Est, an informal brasserie with a spacious waterfront terrace. The menu includes Belgian and Mediterranean dishes, burgers, salads and snacks, a good choice for those who want to dine close by after an evening walk along the canals.

• Park restaurant
In a nineteenth century mansion just outside the busiest shopping streets, Parkrestaurant serves classic cuisine with clearly developed menu formulas. The warm, intimate dining room with chandeliers and wooden floors is the setting for more sophisticated dinners, from seafood to meat and carefully chosen wines.

• The Pepper Mill
In a quiet street near the center, restaurant De Pepermolen offers seasonal cuisine inspired by Belgian and French. Guests praise the attention to the friendly service and the ability to create a multi-course menu from a compact menu, making it a suitable address for an evening of dining.

Cafes & bars
• Café't Little Venice
Café't Klein Venice is located on one of the most photographed corners of Bruges, with a view of the canals and the Belfry. On the sun-oriented terrace, you can taste Belgian beers, simple snacks and coffee in a setting that is particularly attractive, especially in the late afternoon.

• The Flower Cafe Bruges
This charming coffee bar in the center of Bruges is known for its flowery interior and friendly welcome. It offers cappuccino, smoothies, sweet treats and light breakfast or lunch options, a great stop on a route between the Markt and the surrounding shopping streets.

• La Fuente Lounge Bar
On a historic square in the city center, you will find Loungebar La Fuente, an attractive bar with a clear nod to Mediterranean tapas and an extensive drinks menu. The combination of small dishes to share and a selection of cocktails and wines makes this a good spot for a late aperitif or a relaxing end to the evening.

Lunch shops
• Adriaan Coffee Bar
Near the Stadsschouwburg, Coffeebar Adriaan serves barista coffee, breakfast dishes, granola, sandwiches and homemade cakes in a former bank building with a neoclassical look. It's a comfortable spot for a quiet brunch or a light lunch with a view of city life.

• Bar Lowie
Bar Lowie, on a side street from the historic center, is an all-day brunch bar that focuses on local products and specialty coffee. The menu includes savory waffles, toasts, bowls and sweet dishes, with various vegetarian and often vegan alternatives.

• Li O Lait
Li O Lait in the city center combines coffee shop and eatery and offers soups, bagels, quiches and homemade cakes in addition to coffee specialties. The relaxed atmosphere and the mix of locals and visitors make this a great place to take a break while exploring the city.

Accessibility

• You can travel by train to Bruges station, from where it takes about twenty to twenty five minutes to walk to B&B Contrast, depending on your route. Various city lines connect the station with stops in the vicinity of the Coupure and Predikherenrei, so that you can cover the last few meters by bus if you wish.

• If you arrive by car, you can reach Bruges via the motorways towards the coast and then follow the signs to the center. From the ring road around the city, various access roads lead to car parks just inside or just outside the city walls, from where you can walk along the water to the B&B.

• Travellers who enjoy cycling can combine Bruges with tours in the surrounding polder landscape. Thanks to the covered bicycle parking at B&B Contrast, it is possible to store your own bicycles safely, or to return home with peace of mind after a day's rental in the city.

Parking

B&B Contrast does not have its own closed parking for guests. In the immediate vicinity, most streets are subject to the general parking rules of the city center, with paid and time-limited street parking. This allows short-term parking for loading and unloading, but is less suitable for a car that you want to leave behind for several days.

For longer stays, urban car parks are a more practical choice. Parking Ezelstraat is an underground garage on the edge of the center, about ten to fifteen minutes' walk from the B&B, and is a good base for those who want to park their car safely and covered and travel the rest of the stay on foot or by bus. Another option is Parking Pandreitje, underground near the Queen Astrid Park, from where you can walk to the Predikherenrei via quiet streets and squares.

If you want to reduce costs, you can opt for one of the peripheral car parks just outside the city center, such as the Bevrijdingslaan edge parking. There you can park for free and continue your way to the center on foot or by bus, which is particularly interesting for longer stays or during busy weekends and holiday periods. For current rates, any free bus connections and available charging points for electric cars, it is wise to check the latest information about parking in Bruges before departure.

Summary

B&B Contrast is a small-scale bed and breakfast in a mansion on the Predikherenrei, where the atmosphere of a historic home is combined with contemporary comfort. The waterfront location and a few minutes' walk from the center provides a quiet starting point in the middle of the city: close to museums, squares and canals, yet in a residential neighborhood with a relaxed pace. With a personal welcome, a green courtyard, a decent breakfast and secure bicycle parking, this address is particularly suitable for travelers who want to discover Bruges on foot or by bike. The lack of your own car park is more than offset by good parking options in the underground garages and peripheral car parks around the city, so that you can park your car easily and enjoy your stay largely car-free.
